Foeniculum vulgare, commonly known as fennel is very flavorful. Fennel bulb with leaves and fennel seeds have a mild licorice flavor. Fennel seeds look like cumin but have a round shape. In Indian cooking, only fennel seeds are used.
Fennel seeds are used in meat curries and also fish preparations. Fennel seeds act as a mouth freshener and aids in digestion. It is also one of the ingredients in tea masala and garam masala.
Fennel has shown to improve heart health, reduces inflammation, helps in curbing appetite, Calms and soothes the body and has been used to relieve menopausal symptoms. It also helps in regulating blood pressure, reduces water retention, and helps in reducing acne.
Fennel seeds are used in small amounts in Indian food. You can enhance the flavor of fennel by roasting and crushing the seeds. Fennel seeds add depth to dishes. Fennel can be stored in the pantry for 6 months to a year.
