Spicy Saturday: Aniseeds


The greenish seeds of Aniseeds come from Pimpinella Anisum. Originally aniseeds were found in Greece and Rome. The plant is also found in Southwest Asia and Egypt. The herbaceous aniseed plant belongs to the carrot family. Aniseeds

contains an essential oil called anethole. The seeds are excellent source of

minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium, manganese, zinc, potassium and copper.

Aniseeds can be ground into powder. Ground aniseeds will lose potency very

quickly.


Aniseeds are used to cure irritative throat and cough, also aniseeds are used to

induce sleep, helps digestion, reduce cramps and diarrhea. Aniseeds are also

helpful in relieving of headaches and migraines.

Aniseed has a licorice flavor. In India aniseeds are offered to chew after a meal.

Aniseeds are used sometimes in fish and meat dishes and in baked breads.

Aniseeds can be stored in a cool dry place or in in the pantry for 2 to 3 years.
