Healthful Herbs: Dill Leaves


Dill is a hardy annual plant. Dill is an herb that is grown in India and also in other parts of the world.  Dill has slender stems with spiky soft leaves.  Dill leaves have a herby flavor which gives a strong aroma.  It can elevate the flavor of many dishes. In India it is often paired with yogurt, potato or as a vegetable with greens and peanuts.

 Both dill leaves and seeds have antioxidant properties.  It reduces chronic inflammation it helps in arthritis and also in Alzheimer’s.  It is a good source of Vitamin C and has antibacterial effects and helps bone health. It is generally safe but can cause an allergic reaction in some people.


Dill leaves and dried dill leaves and seeds are used in marinades, and salads or yogurt based salad called “ Raita”. In India dried dill is used to flavor pickles. Fresh dill leaves  can be kept in the fridge for one week or frozen up to 6 months
