Healthful Herbs: Cilantro Leaves


Cilantro leaves comes from Coriandum  Sativum. Cilantro leaves has a distinct unique flavor which some people hate. Cilantro grows on long tender stems. Cilantro leaves have a pungent, bright, lemony and peppery flavor.  Cilantro leaves need to be washed to get rid of the grit and dirt. In Indian cuisine mainly leaves are used to garnish or also used in marinades.  Cilantro stems are also used in marinades and cooking. When buying Cilantro look for fresh cilantro leaves and stems. Fresh cilantro leaves should be green and bright.  

Storage – Cilantro wilts quickly. Do not wash it before use. Keep the cilantro cold and keep it in the fridge.


The benefits of cilantro are that it is low in calories. Itis high in Vitamin K, Vitamin C and Vitamin A.  It is a good antioxidant.  Cilantro leaves have a calming and soothing effect.
