Coconut is grown in a tropical climate. These are large seeds of Coconut Palms – Crocus Nucifera. The exterior is brown and has a fibrous husk. When opened it reveals white meat. Coconut oil, coconut milk and coconut water are all derived from Coconut. Coconut meat is grated and then used in cooking. In India coconut is used in cooking. Coconut oil is used sparingly in cooking but used to massage the skin.Coconut milk is used mostly to make curries. It is used mostly used in southern parts of India. Coconut water is used to make smoothies and drinks.


Coconut may boost HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol), may reduce abdominal fat and may have anti-microbial effects. Coconut oil can prevent hair damage. Coconut may boost brain function in Alzheimer’s disease.


You can use coconut meat in salads, yogurt or oatmeal. Coconut flour is a recent addition to the list of products derived from Coconut.

Coconut can be refrigerated and grated coconut can be frozen for 4to 6 weeks. Coconut milk can be on the shelf in the pantry until the expiration date.
