Black gram belongs to the plant Phaseolus Mungo. It is also called Vigna mungo. In shape, it looks like a mung bean. The polished version is white in color. In India, it is called Urad dal. It is a good source of protein and is high in fiber.


It is rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. It has a mucousy texture and has an earthy flavor. Pancakes called Dosa are made from black gram.


In India, it is used in cooking. It also helps to remove wrinkles, alleviate joint pain and hair loss. It has anti-aging properties, good protein content, boosts bone health, and regulates diabetes. It can be stored in the pantry in an airtight container for 12 months.
